Start with the height of your door and yard
A concrete patio can be a good fit when you want an outdoor gathering space near ground level. A deck can make more sense when the doorway is well above the yard or an elevated platform is part of the plan. For a suitable ground-level site, concrete offers a durable gathering space with plenty of finish options.
Why homeowners consider a concrete patio
A patio provides a broad surface for seating and outdoor furniture without a field of deck boards. The perimeter can be planned around a dining area, lounge space or path to the yard. Broom finishes keep the appearance straightforward, while stamped concrete offers pattern and border choices. Doorway transitions and drainage still need careful review.
Plan around your doorway height
An elevated doorway or sloping yard may favor a deck or a combined design. A patio is not an automatic substitute for an elevated structure. Compare complete plans that address the same height changes, stairs and access. A contractor must assess the actual site and any applicable requirements before the layout is settled.
Compare the care each surface needs
Concrete is not maintenance-free: cleaning, surface care and any sealer recommendations should match the finish. Deck maintenance depends on whether the surface is wood or a particular composite product. Do not assume every deck needs the same treatment; for example, Trex publishes cleaning instructions specifically for its composite products. Review the instructions for the material you are actually considering.
Compare a complete scope, not just a square-foot figure
Removal of the existing structure, access to the backyard, changes in elevation and steps can change the work substantially. A simple ground-level patio and an elevated deck are different projects. Compare the full scope and what is excluded before drawing a cost conclusion. No universal savings percentage applies to every yard.
A practical way to make the decision
Sketch the furniture first. Mark the door, proposed walking routes and any spaces you want to keep. Take a photo from the doorway looking out and another from the yard toward the house. Those views help explain the elevation and layout you are working with.
