Two concrete quotes can describe very different jobs even when both say “patio” or “driveway.” Before comparing the totals, put the written proposals beside each other and check what each contractor has included.
Start with the same project
Compare the proposed area, shape and location. Note whether the quote covers new concrete, removal and replacement, or an extension. A larger area or additional work is not a like-for-like comparison. If you do not know the measurements, send photos and ask for the dimensions to be confirmed.
Compare the finish and details
Look for the chosen surface finish, borders, steps and landings. A plain patio and one with decorative details should not be compared on total price alone. Steps should include their number and width; a photo can help explain different widths or an unusual layout.
Check the surrounding work
Ask each contractor to clarify removal, disposal, access, preparation, cleanup and the treatment of adjoining surfaces. Flag anything you do not understand rather than assuming it is covered. Ask for any changes to appear in the written proposal before you agree to the work.
Compare communication as well as price
Review real completed projects, ask who you will communicate with and discuss the proposed schedule. Check that you understand the payment terms and what happens if the project scope changes. A clear written quote gives both sides a useful reference.
